Lopetegui terminates Wolverhampton contract early

Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui terminated the contract with Wolverhampton ahead of schedule by agreement of the parties. Together with the mentor, the club will leave his coaching staff.

“While we aimed to move into the new season together, it is common knowledge that there were differing opinions on some key topics and all parties agreed that it would be best to part ways before the new campaign,” Wolves sports director Matt Hobbs said.

Lopetegui was unhappy with the club’s policies, the coach was worried about Wolverhampton’s problems with financial fair play. After retiring as a player, Lopetegui transitioned into coaching. He managed various Spanish youth national teams, achieving success at the U19 and U21 levels. However, he gained significant prominence when he was appointed as the head coach of the Spanish national team in 2016.

Lopetegui’s time as the Spanish national team manager was marked by his work to rejuvenate the squad and implement a more possession-oriented style of play. Unfortunately for him, his tenure with the national team came to an abrupt end just before the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He had agreed to take over as the head coach of Real Madrid after the tournament, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided to terminate his contract due to the way the announcement was handled, which led to controversy and disruption on the eve of the World Cup.

After leaving the Spanish national team, Lopetegui became the head coach of Real Madrid for the 2018-2019 season. However, his tenure with the club was short-lived, as a string of poor results led to his dismissal just a few months into the season. Following his departure from Real Madrid, he was appointed as the manager of Sevilla FC, where he found more success. Under his management, Sevilla won the UEFA Europa League in the 2019-2020 season.

Julen took charge of the English in November 2022, when the team was in the penultimate place in the standings of the championship of England.

In the 2022/2023 season, Wolverhampton finished 13th in the Premier League, the team scored 41 points and broke away from the relegation zone by 7 points.
